Lab and imaging orders are proposed from within a visit and created against the patient's record when you finalize. Run the test in-house or send it to a reference lab, then enter results when they're ready, even days after the visit is finalized.

Ordering a lab or imaging study

  1. Add the order to the visit

In an active visit, add a lab or imaging order to the plan. It's proposed as an order card alongside the SOAP, medications, and charges, the same review-before-commit pattern as the rest of the visit. Nothing is written to the patient's lab history yet.

  2. Confirm it

Confirming an order checks lab.order or imaging.order on the server. You can queue up multiple orders on one visit before finalizing.

  3. Sign & finalize the visit

Finalizing is what actually creates the lab result row, in a pending state, waiting on a result. It's tied back to the visit it was ordered from.

  4. Reference labs can push results in automatically

If your clinic connects IDEXX VetConnect Plus or Antech ZOOM, incoming result files are parsed and matched to the right patient/order automatically. Anything that can't be auto-matched lands in a review queue for staff to resolve by hand.

Entering and releasing results

  1. Enter or receive the result

Open the pending order from Lab results in the sidebar or the patient's Labs tab and enter the value, unit, and reference range, or let a connector fill it in. Chartling has a species-aware reference-range library, so an unusual value is flagged abnormal automatically even before someone reviews it.

  2. Release it to the patient record

Marking a result available makes it visible on the patient's Labs tab and history.

  3. Acknowledge it

A staff member with lab.acknowledge reviews the result and acknowledges it. This is also the point where Chartling can draft a plain-language owner summary of the result (Intelligence and Practice tiers) for you to edit and release to the portal alongside the discharge.

Lab history

A patient's full lab history is visible on their profile under the Labs tab. You can:

Result statusMeaning
PendingOrder placed at finalize; waiting on a value
AvailableResult entered or received and released onto the patient's chart
AcknowledgedA staff member with lab.acknowledge has reviewed it. This is what can trigger the owner summary draft

FAQ

Can I enter lab results after a visit has been finalized?

Yes. That's the normal case for anything sent out to a reference lab. Enter the result from Lab results in the sidebar or the patient's Labs tab any time after the order was placed at finalize. It's appended to the visit it was ordered from without reopening or modifying the signed SOAP note.

Is there a lab test catalog I need to configure?

No separate catalog to maintain. You type or pick the test name when you enter a result, and reference ranges come from Chartling's built-in species-aware library unless you enter your own. There's nothing to pre-configure before you can order or record a test.

Do lab results appear in the owner portal?

Once a result is acknowledged, the portal shows the test name, date, and (on Intelligence and Practice tiers) the plain-language owner summary you released with it. Raw analyte tables and reference ranges stay clinic-side; the portal never shows the numeric result table itself.

Can I attach a scanned PDF from an external lab?

Yes. When entering a result, attach the reference lab's file. It's stored with the result and accessible from the patient's lab history. If your clinic uses IDEXX VetConnect Plus or Antech ZOOM, connected results file in automatically instead of a manual upload.
